Commemoration Park Working Group

Given the recent tragic discoveries at Indian Residential Schools, FRCN Leadership recognizes the importance of offering acknowledgement to all the students who attended residential and day schools.

FRCN Leadership along with the Reconciliation Team will be establishing a working group tasked with creating a commemoration park at the site of the old treaty grounds. The working group along with a team of managers will develop a plan for the area which is of great historical significance to the community. It is the ideal location for the park.

It is understood that a park will not erase the tragic history and legacy of the Residential and Day Schools. For the survivors, it may offer a place of solace as well as be a dedication in remembrance of all that has been lost. The Park may include a monument dedicated to the IRS and Day School Survivors. It is one idea to contemplate. There is no plan in place yet. The hope is that there will be enough community interest to share ideas and thoughts as to what it should look like.

The Park will also serve as an education tool for the younger generations to learn about and understand the devastating history of residential and day schools.

If you would like to become part of this working group, please submit your name to Tanya at 204-645-4505 or frcntanya@mymts.net by July 16, 2021. The first meeting is planned for the following week.

If you are not interested in becoming part of the working group but would like to share information or ideas, please contact Lorne or Tanya to arrange a meeting. Please remember all names will be withheld, should you decide to share information that you are uncomfortable with others knowing.
