FRCN Child & Family Law
On January 1, 2020, Bill C-92 came into force. This legislation was co-developed with Indigenous, provincial, and territorial partners with the goal of keeping Indigenous children and youth connected to their families, communities, and culture.
The Canadian Government is providing funding to assist Indigenous governing bodies interested in creating their own laws with respect to child and family welfare. Fisher River Cree Nation and the Reconciliation Project were successful in securing funding to develop our own Child & Family Law which will serve as our guiding principle. Sonny Cochrane and his team from Cochrane Saxberg will be working very closely with Fisher River to ensure all national standards and regulations are met as well as ensure the preservation of cultural identity and connections to the customs and traditions of our community.
Please take some time to read the following documents which will provide information related to the history, framework and process of Bill C-92. There is also a questionnaire on child welfare which can be filled out online or a copy can be picked up at the Fisher River Economic Development Office.
All community members are encouraged to become part of the development process. Please contact the Reconciliation team if you are interested in participating in one of the working groups. If you are not available for the working groups but would like to have your voice heard, please contact us. We will be glad to meet with you. We want to ensure all people have the opportunity to express their thoughts and concerns.
