Chief and Council are asking members of Fisher River Cree Nation (“FRCN”) to participate in an important upcoming event that will shape the future of our community—the Ratification Vote on the proposed Fisher River Cree Nation Matrimonial Real Property Law (the “FRCN MRP Law”). This vote is a significant step towards self-governance and ensuring that our laws reflect our Nation’s values and traditions.

Your participation in this Ratification Vote is crucial. By voting, you have the opportunity to influence how matrimonial real property matters are handled on our lands. The proposed FRCN MRP Law is designed to replace the government of Canada’s federal laws regarding matrimonial real property on reserves. The FRCN MRP Law better respects our culture and customs and better reflects our members’ needs rather than external federal rules. Our law offers several benefits:

  1. Respect for FRCN Rights: It acknowledges our treaty and inherent right to self-government, replacing federal and provincial laws on matrimonial real property on our lands.
  2. Protection for Families: The law ensures fair rights to the family home and property for both spouses or common-law partners when relationships break down.
  3. Support for Children: Decisions made under this law prioritize the best interests of our children, ensuring their stability and welfare.
  4. Respect for FRCN Jurisdiction: The law gives FRCN full authority over matrimonial real property decisions, promoting community-driven processes like mediation.

Information Meetings will be held to discuss the voting process and the proposed FRCN MRP Law as follows:

  • March 3, 2026 at the Community Hall from 5:30-8:30 pm
  • March 5, 2026 at Canad Inns Club Regent from 5:00-8:00 pm

The Ratification Vote will take place as follows:

  • March 19, 2026 at the Community Hall from 8:30 am – 6:00 pm
  • March 12, 2026 Advance Poll at Canad Inns Polo Park from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm
  • Electronic voting is available from 5:30 pm on March 3 until the close of polls on March 19.

This Information Package will provide you with additional details. We urge you to take part in this important decision-making process. Your vote is vital in ensuring that our laws reflect our Nation’s rights and protect FRCN members. Let us come together to shape a future that honours our traditions and supports our people. Thank you for your participation.
